Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where the arts, history and nature converge to create a holistic community resource in Staten Island’s North Shore. Founded in 1976, we transformed a historic 83-acre, 19th-century charitable rest home for “aged, decrepit and worn out sailors” into a vibrant hub of contemporary culture and community connection, sustainability and discovery. Today, we strive to be a locally impactful destination, true to our values of stewardship and conservation, inclusion and discovery, artistic vibrancy and community. Snug Harbor aims to reflect and celebrate the vibrant diversity of Staten Island in our programs, staff and board. We offer experiences that inspire, empower and inform, and grow resiliency through centering equity, creativity, sustainability and health. We invite artists and communities to imagine, create and connect, to be the place where Staten Island’s historical legacy feeds today’s culture. We steward a welcoming environment to provide an oasis of nature, reflection, security and connection – a place deep enough for all of Staten Island’s diverse communities to find anchorage. We promote one destination of discovery to ensure that Snnug Harbor is a must-see destination for New Yorkers, domestic and international tourists. Snug Harbor is home to the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden, Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Staten Island Museum, Staten Island Children’s Museum, Noble Maritime Collection and so much more. We invite you to explore our 83 acres of gardens, wetlands, forests, and historic buildings. Our grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk, free of charge. We look forward to welcoming you!
